The door to the café car closed behind him. He took a half step forward, the train shook, he drew his Pressure in tight and stamped his foot--hard--to balance himself. Steady, he took a careful sip of his steaming full-to-the-brim drink. With the top lowered to a level safe below the edge of the cup, Cyril made his way back to the booth he'd been sitting in.
"You were going--"
The trained cla-clack, cla-clacked along. Cyril grunted. "I know damn well what I was going...Hey, no, don't. I can be pissed and I'm going to be. Am I supposed to be happy about this, uh? Glad he's gone? Didn't think so. This is how I'm going to deal with it and if you don't like it you can go fuck yourself with something big and rusty for all I care." He turned his cup on the saucer and it made a soft swish scrape noise. "You wanted to know when I first knew he was something special?" He looked into the eyes of the others. "Something," he shook his head and half scoffed, "different. Better than me. Better than any of us." No one said anything, it was true. "I don't want to talk about that, not right now. I'll tell you about these." He pulled his twin knives from their sheathes at his waist. "He was with me when we found the metal."
"Fused asteroids, right?"
Cyril nodded. He hadn't seen who asked the question, but it didn't matter. "Yeah. Can't be sharpened. Never need to be anyways. There's nothing harder, not that I've encountered anyways. We, ah...Tom and I were en-route to a gate. About to jump when he noticed a couple asteroids in the distance. I don't know if he saw them or felt them with his Pressure, but he wanted to watch them." He smiled. "Said something like 'They look like two dancers drawn to each other in the night.' That way of talking he had, man. I don't even know if that's what he said, but it was something like that. The way he saw beauty in everything, love in everything. I think that's what I'll miss the most.
"He pulled our cruiser around to zip past the gate. Got a call from control asking us just what in the hell we were doing. Tom let them know he wanted to watch these asteroids and control told him he was nuts. I remember he just smiled at that. We held there in space as the two rocks smashed into each other. There was a flash. I feel like there was color, red, blue, purple, orange, and yellow. But maybe my memory is adding that, I honestly don't know. That's how I see it though.
"Tom gasp and said we had, just had, to try and collect some of the shards. Maybe we'd get lucky and find some that could be used as blades. He knew I'd been needing a good pair. I think he knew we'd find what I wanted too. I never expected to find blades from fused asteroids though, but that's how it went with Tom. Just being around him made things better.
"I took over piloting the cruiser, he climbed into a suit, and I dragged him into the debris field. He gathered a few pieces and two of them are what you see here." Cyril looked down at his knives and grinned.
